What is lorem ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is dummy text that designers and developers use to fill a layout before the real content is ready. It looks like readable Latin, with normal word lengths and sentence rhythm, so a page looks realistic, but it does not distract people with meaning. That way, clients and teams focus on the design, fonts and spacing instead of reading the words.

The text comes from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a work by the Roman writer Cicero from 45 BC. It has been used as printing filler since at least the 1500s. You can read its history on the lorem ipsum Wikipedia page.

How to use the lorem ipsum generator

1. Enter how many units you need (1 to 200).
2. Choose paragraphs, sentences or words.
3. Keep Start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" ticked for the classic opening, or untick it for random text.
4. Tick Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags if you are pasting into HTML.

When not to use it

Never publish lorem ipsum on a live website. Pages with placeholder text look unfinished, confuse visitors and can be treated as low-quality content. That matters if you plan to apply for Google AdSense, because sites with placeholder or thin content are often not approved. Search your site for "lorem" before launch.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

Lorem ipsum is based on a passage from "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the ends of good and evil), written by the Roman philosopher Cicero in 45 BC. Printers and typesetters scrambled and shortened the text centuries ago to create filler that looks like real writing without being readable. It became popular again when desktop publishing software included it in templates. Because the words are not real sentences, readers focus on the layout and typography instead of the meaning.

How much text do you need?

Generate a little more than you need for each element so you can test how the design handles longer real content, which is often where layouts break.

Placeholder text best practices

1. Replace it before launch. Search your site for "lorem" before going live; forgotten placeholder text looks unprofessional and confuses visitors.
2. Never publish pages full of lorem ipsum. Google may treat them as low-value or empty pages.
3. Use real headlines when you can. Real headlines show whether titles fit on one line.
4. Test with long words and other languages. German compound words or Urdu text may need more space than Latin filler.

Alternatives to lorem ipsum

Some teams prefer content-first design, where real or draft copy is written before the layout. This avoids surprises, such as a product name being much longer than the placeholder. Using placeholder text with web builders
