Combine PDFs without uploading them
Most online PDF tools upload your documents to their servers. This PDF merger is different: it uses a JavaScript library called pdf-lib to join your files directly in your browser. Your contracts, invoices, bank statements and ID scans never leave your computer or phone, and merging is fast because there is no upload or download wait.
Use it to:
- combine scanned pages into one file for an application
- join invoices or receipts for your accountant
- put a cover letter, CV and certificates into a single PDF
- merge chapters or reports into one document
How to merge PDF files
- Click the box or drag your PDF files onto it. You can add files in several batches.
- Use the arrow buttons to put the files in the right order, or × to remove one.
- Click Merge PDFs.
- Click Download merged PDF to save the combined file.
The pages of each file are copied exactly as they are, including text, images, links and page sizes. Mixed page sizes, such as A4 and Letter, are kept.
Tips for a clean merged PDF
- Name your files with numbers (01-cover.pdf, 02-cv.pdf) before adding them, so the order is easy to check.
- If the merged file is too large to email or upload, shrink it with our Compress PDF tool.
- Need only some pages from a file? Extract them first with Split PDF, then merge.
- Have photos or scans in JPG format? Turn them into a PDF with Image to PDF and then merge.
Limits and good to know
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged until the password is removed with the program that created them.
- Interactive form fields and digital signatures may not work in the merged copy, since signatures only cover the original file.
- Very large files (hundreds of MB) depend on your device's memory. A computer handles more than an older phone.
PDF is an open standard maintained by ISO. Adobe's page on what a PDF is gives a good introduction. Browse all our PDF and image tools.
Related PDF tasks
Many people merge files as one step in a bigger job. To sign and send a contract, you might split out the signature page with Split PDF, merge it back, then shrink the result with Compress PDF. To share pages on social media, turn them into pictures with PDF to Image.
Everyday reasons to merge PDFs
- Job applications: combine your CV, cover letter, degree and experience letters into one file, because many portals accept only a single upload.
- Visa and university applications: bank statements, passport copy and forms in the order the checklist asks.
- Accounts and tax: monthly invoices or receipts merged into one file for your accountant.
- Contracts: the main agreement plus signed annexures.
- Students: assignment pages, scanned notes and a title page as one submission.
- Real estate and legal: property papers, NOC letters and ID copies in one bundle.
How merging works behind the scenes
A PDF is a container of pages. Merging copies the page objects from each file into a new document, in the order you choose. Because the pages are copied, not re-printed, text stays selectable and images keep their original quality. Fonts embedded in the original files are carried over, so the result looks exactly the same.
This tool does the work with the open-source pdf-lib library inside your browser. Your files are never uploaded, which matters for documents like bank statements, ID cards and contracts.
Organising before you merge
- Rename files with numbers (01-cv.pdf, 02-cover-letter.pdf) so they appear in the right order.
- Remove pages you do not need first with Split PDF, for example blank back pages from a scan.
- Convert photos to PDF with Image to PDF if some documents are only pictures on your phone.
- Drag to reorder in the list, then merge.
- Compress the final file with Compress PDF if the portal has a size limit.
What can stop a merge
Most PDFs merge without problems. Exceptions:
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened without the password. Remove the protection in a PDF reader first, if you are allowed to.
- Damaged files that do not open in a normal PDF viewer usually will not merge either.
- Very large files (hundreds of MB) may be slow on phones with limited memory. Merge them on a computer or in smaller groups.
Checking the result
Always open the merged file and scroll through it before sending. Check that pages are in the correct order, nothing is upside down and the total page count is what you expect. If you need individual pages as pictures, for example for a presentation, use PDF to Image. For background on the format itself, see the PDF Association.
Step-by-step: a job application in one PDF
Here is a real example of how people use this tool every day. You are applying for a job and the portal accepts one file of up to 5 MB:
- Export your CV from Word or Canva as PDF.
- Take clear photos of your degree and experience letter, then turn them into a PDF with Image to PDF.
- Open this tool and add the CV first, then the cover letter, the degree and the experience letter.
- Drag the files into the order the employer asked for.
- Click merge and download the combined file.
- If the file is larger than 5 MB, run it through Compress PDF with the Recommended setting.
- Open the final PDF, check every page and give it a clear name such as
Ali-Khan-Application-Marketing-Manager.pdf.
A tidy, single file with a professional name makes a better first impression than several loose attachments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to merge confidential PDFs here?
Yes. Files are processed in your browser and are never uploaded to our server.
How many PDFs can I merge?
There is no fixed limit. Merging dozens of files works fine on most computers.
Will the quality change?
No. Pages are copied without re-compressing, so text and images keep their original quality.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, it works in modern browsers on Android and iPhone.
Do bookmarks and links survive merging?
Page content, including the look of links, is copied. Bookmarks (the outline panel) and some interactive features may not be kept.
Can I merge PDFs with different page sizes?
Yes. Each page keeps its own size, so an A4 page and a Letter page can sit in the same file.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit because everything runs on your device. The practical limit is your device's memory.
